Post-secondary Education And The Benefits Associated With It?

It has always been the universal school of thought that people go to university to attain social prestige and money without which their place in the elite society is ostensibly not sustainable. Another school of thought suggests that going to university to study something only theoretical is nothing else but a waste of time. So who is right and who is wrong? You be the judge!

As the saying goes, “A man who does not know the other person’s point of view does not know his point of view.” What I mean by this is that it is imperative not to look things only from your side but also from other people’s perspective.

However, one thing is certain: that education whether theoretical or practical is key to everybody’s progress and advancement in life. So, the idea that theoretical education is just a waste of time is not true in that not every job that can generate money for the person is only done practically. Rather, it could be theoretical as well; and that is one way of saying that hands-on education and theoretical education are intertwined, especially in this competitive and ever-changing world.

In amplification of this, it is not easy in today’s world to enter into the workforce and thereby get a sustainable job without first graduating from a university with a higher degree. And to add an insult to the injury, what was once accepted to get into the workforce is not applicable any longer. One main reason for this to happen is that the world is becoming globalized, and that is why getting a higher degree from a university is very important.
As we may have seen or heard in Ontario particularly the GTA in the last decade or so, there are so many qualified people who got their degrees either from universities in Canada, US, or Europe or from their countries of origin and who came here equipped with knowledge but who could not get a job .

On the brighter side of the coin, there are many young Somalis from all walks of life who graduated from universities across Canada and the US who are now in their heyday when it comes to salary scale or job security; and they are now reaping the seeds they harvested by staying in school. Most of the latter group are doing fine and have bought their first car and home for themselves or for their families. So, the benefits of staying in school and graduating from a university with a degree in your hands cannot be underestimated.

In this competitive and volatile world economic uncertainty, hundreds of thousands of applicants are possibly applying today for just one position, each trying to elbow [push] the other aside in terms of experience and education. And this shows what used to be the norm in the past has become an out-dated scenario.

That is why it is important that we should not loose sight of the fact that nothing stays the same as before in this fast-paced and ever-changing world. And it would be more difficult or at least next to impossible to get a high-paying secure job without having attained at least a Master’s or PhD degree.
